Layer 1
Create a normal gradient fill.

Layer 2
Apply Filter > Render > Clouds and set the layer to soft light, opacity 25%.

Layer 2-5
Importing two different views of the model, Apply filter > Blur >gaussian blur: Radius 5. Also added some lighting to the left model using my architecturak lighting tutorial.

Layer 6
Using Airbrushing tutorial add "wings" of airbrushing to go behind the main render.

Layer 6,7
Import the main render and duplicate the layer on the first layer apply Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur radius 10 and set to multiply to add a shadow.

Layer 7-25
Using the architectural lighting tutorial add lighting to the underside and uppersides of various "blocks".

Layer 26
Duplicate the original gradient layer and place it over the top of the image, then erase the center so the sides are slightly faded as above.

Layer 27-42
Importing the three views of the craft model use the architectural lighting tutorial to add engine lights of blue and red, also add airbrushing with motion blur to work as engine trails.

Layer 43-46
Add small areas of red lights to the upper blocks apply gaussian blur, radius 3 and then Edit -> Fade Gaussian Blur to 50%.

Layer 47
Using the architectural lighting 2 tutorial add lighting to the faces of the "blocks" and the side of the "bridge" on the left of the image.

Layer 48
To add "over-clouds" Apply Filter > Render > Clouds. Then Apply Filter -> Render -> Difference clouds 5 times, and erase the bottom third of the layer. Finally set the layer to soft light 40% opacity.

Layer 49
On the next layer just use Filter -> Render -> Clouds erasing most of the perimeter of the layer set to color dodge 20% opacity.

Layer 50
Create a color balance layer with -44, Yellow on highlight and +5 blue on both midtones and shadows

With the render, Apply Filter > Distort > Radial Blur: Zoom 100%. Apply image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast: Brightness -100 , Contrast -100.

Layer 7
Another render copy, Apply Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur: Radius 10. Apply image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast: Brightness -100, Contrast -100. Move the layer slightly to offset the shadow.

Layer 8, 9
Create an area of simple airbrushing. Duplicate and offset.

Layer 10, 11, 12
Create a smaller area at the center of simple airbrushing. Duplicate and reduce in size twice.

Layer 13
With a black brush create a large area of airbrush in three lines at the center bottom of the image.

Layer 14, 15
Create two sets of tenticles on either side of the center.

Layer 16, 17
Create 2 areas of more detailed airbrushing at the start and sides of each of the tenticles.

Layer 18, 19
Create 2 areas of exploding pixie dust. Set the layers to soft light

Layer 20, 21
Create a basic layer with the render on again. To lighten the render duplicate this layer and set to screen, opacity 50%.

Layer 22
Duplicate the render again. Apply image > Adjustments > Color Balance. Setting the highlights to yellow and mid to green. Set the layer to hard light, opacity 65%.

Layer 23
Create areas of more detailed airbushing over the render, using the Crafted Light Tutorial to pick out key pertruding areas of the render.

Layer 24
Duplicate the original gradient layer and carefully erase the central part, so that the image comes through from underneath but fades towards the edges.

Layer 25
Create a Hue/Saturation layer: Colorize with saturation set at 0. Set the opacity to 55%.

Layer 26
Create a color balance layer:
Highlights: Yellow: -80, Magenta -10
Midtones: Blue +67, Green +40

Layer 27
Create a Color Balance Layer:
Highlights: Yellow: -55, Midtones: Blue +60. Shadows: Cyan -40
Apply a gradient mask to the layer so that it applies only towards the top left of the image.

Layer 16, 17
Duplicate the Render Twice, slightly offsetting each. This adds much larger scale to the structures. Use the eraser to rub out the middle unwanted area.

Layer 18
Duplicate the original gradient layer and carefully erase the central part, so that the image comes through from underneath but fades towards the edges.

Layer 19
Create a hue/saturation layer colorize with saturation set at 0. Set the opacity to 80%.

Layer 20
Create a color balance layer.
Highlights: Yellow -66
Midtones: Blue +20, Red +35
Shadows: Blue +15

Layer 21
Create a levels layer: Red input levels: 0, 1.3, 255

I have started with a render with the standard colorisation below

Set the brush as above and brush across the area required for general volume lighting similar to that shown below.

Apply Filter > Blur > Radial Blur Zoom 100%. The result should be similiar to below

using the above eraser settings. Lightly brush over the lighting like the image below

Apply Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur radius 2.5.

Using the above settings for the lasso tool while holding shift select from parts of the render as shown below.

Now simply delete these unwanted areas from the volume light area.

Set a pen tool as above and scribble across the canvas until you have a similar lock to the one below.

Apply the Filter > Distort > Wave effect with the standard settings. Then Edit > Fade Wave. Repeat this another two times but don't fade the wave on the last round it should look something like this.

Apply the Filter > Blur > Radical Blur Zoom 50%.
Click Edit > Fade Radical Blur > 75%.

Set the eraser as above and brush lightly across the canvas until you have a smilar look to the one below

Apply a Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur set the radius so you get the required detail of airbushing Apply > edit > Transform > Distort to create the required shape.

Select And Bring Forward

1. Were gonna start off by choosing a image. I used one of a piano. Feel free to download it and do the same as I did with it.

2. Now press the "Quick Mask Mode" (Q) button. Double-click to choose color and opacity.

3. Now grab the "Brush Tool" (B) and start coloring. You can eighter color what you want to select or what you don't want to select. Doesnt really matter at this stage.

4. Go back to "Standard Mode" (Q , button left to the "Quick Mask Mode" button) and now you'll see that eighter the part you left blank (and thus didnt paint red) is selected.

NOTE: If you colored the part you wanted to select you'll see that is that part is NOT selected. You'll have to press SHIFT CTRL i or Select > Inverse.

5. Now goto Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and I used a 2,5 Pixel radius. (Experiment with it!)

6. As an extra you can press CTRL U and set the "Lightness" to -15. And thats it for today!

Photo Manipulation

First at all, we need a picture to manipulate...

1. I've created a new blank document in Photoshop (1200 x 1500 px at 300 dpi). I copy the image (ctrl+c) and paste it (ctrl+v) in the new document. This is called "Layer 1". I'm going' to do some changes in the size, cause I want to focus me more in the face. I do it... But I got some pixelation here! Well, Is time to play with some filters effect... I add some "Dust and Scratches" Filter > Noise > Dust & Scratches ... I use a radious of 3 or 4... I like the painted effect that this filters give to the image.

I made some color corrections using Image > Adjustments > Curves and then Image > Adjustments > Variations. Ok, now I duplicate the layer, and blurry it the new layer (Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur) by 15 or 20 pix. I add a layer mask and in the mask, use a gradient (from white to black, from the left inferior cornet to the upper right side of the image). This touch give me the effect of a blurry in some specific part of the image. I merge down both layers, and it result in my "Layer 1"

2. Ok, but... What about the rest of the layers? Follow me...

I like to work with pieces o' old metals, tubes, wires, and textures...
I choose one , desaturate the image and erase part of the image:

I don't put so much attention to the details here... Just erase all the parts I don't like... And that's my "Layer 2"

3. Now, I add an adjustment layer using: Hue: 184 Saturation: 17 Lightness: 0. And that's my "Layer 3"

4. The "Layer 4" is just a simply layer filled with blue #030830 and in "Exclusion" mode...

5. I click again in the and choose Brightness/Contrast layer: Brightness: 0 and Contrast: +15 And you can see the result: The "Layer 5" is ready to rock!

6. In the next step I've add some color to all the mix... I duplicate from the layer 1, and add a Layer Mask and use a gradient from left to right... That's the "Layer 6"

7. And here comes a nice detail, check it out: I select and copy the Layer 1, and paste it into a new Alpha layer... Then I hit Filter > Pixelate > Color Halftone... With a Max. radious of 10 pixels. I copy and paste it into a new Layer in Overlay mode at 100%. Finally, I've made a Mask (again) and use the radial gradient tool Here is the "Layer 7" face:

8. And now: Magic!! I've a copy of a dark gray surface with a lot o' scratches... I duplicate this image into my document, and play a little with the Brightness and Contrast... And of course, I add (another one) Mask to this layer... I don't want to touch the face, not so much. The "Layer 8" is born!

9. Ummm... For the next step, I've created a new layer, and fills this one with a Pattern, creating the "scan lines" effect here. This layer is in Overlay mode at the 50% of Opacity. And, is called the "Layer 9"

10. Well... I choose a metal object picture, again from Photobreed.com This one looks like a machine internal face... I put this one into a new layer and change the colors a bit using Image > Adjustment > Hue/Saturation... some sepia toning, I think. And now... I choose a Mask! Ha! (If you like to use the masks like me, remember: Apply Layer Mask is your friend, avoid laaaaarge files). I use a soft brush erasing here and there, and setting the layer in Hard Light mode... Finally, the "Layer 10" is here!

11. I used one more picture of old metal stuff (from Photobreed) I desaturate this, and erase part of the image using a mask this time in linear gradient tool, from right to left. I've choose Soft Light mode for this layer... the "Layer 11"

12. I've add an Adjustment layer, (Brightness/Contrast) using this values: Brightness: +23, Contrast: +15. This one is the "Layer 12"

13. Well... This all the image needs, I think. The final details include the black frame around the image, a title (taken from some deep part of my mind or some song...) and of course, don't forget to give the credits to the photographer of the image and all the stocks. You can fold all the layers in a "set" if you want to work with more order. The final image looks like this:

Apply Darker Blue Sky To Your Photograph

1. Open the image that you want to edit. File > Open > Image name.

2. Then go to Image > Adjust > Selective Color and apply the following settings:
- Colors = Blues
- Cyan = 0%
- Magneta = 0%
- Yellow = 0%
- Black = 100%
- Method = Relative
(Change color settings to your liking if you want)

Press OK.

3. Make a luminosity selection by hitting the Ctl + Alt + ~ .

4. Make a duplicate copy of the image (Ctl+J) or Layer > New > Layer Via Copy.

5. Select the new layer and set the new layer's Blending mode to color burn.

6. Now in the new layer erase the parts that you don't want darkend. In this tutorial I erased the part that's over the stones and the grass.

7. Final result.

Creating Old-looking Images

1.
First at all, choose a picture:
We're going to work with one from Virgin-stock, one of my favorites in DA. We changed the size, creating a "zoom" in the face.

2.
We apply here Filter > Noise > Dust & Scratches using: Radious: 4 pixels and Threshold: 0
This will help to dissimulate the image's pixelation.

3.
Making a copy of this layer, we proceed to apply a blur: Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur ... Using 15 pixels. Ok, now click and add a mask to the layer. Using the radial gradient tool make a gradient in the mask like the image in the left.

4.
This is the result of merge both layers.

5.
Now clicking in this icon in the layers palette, select Hue/Saturation and use this values: Hue: 38 Saturation: 22 Lightness: 0 be sure you check the "Colorize" option. Now the image will look like the image in the left.

6.
Open a texture image from zombie-stock, copy (Ctrl+C) and paste it (Ctrl+V) into a new layer and set this one to Multiply.

7.
I click again and choose Brightness/Contrast, using: Brightness: -16 and Contrast: +15.

8.
Well... I use a duplicate from the first layer, change the colors using Curves and Selective Color (From the Image > Adjustment menu) and set the layer to Soft light...

9.
...And add a pair of little blurry white circles in the eyes, in a new layer in Overlay mode.

10.
Now, save the image scratchtexture.jpg (in the left), open it, select all and hit Edit > Define Pattern

11.
Fill a new layer with it, and set this one to Soft light. Add a border and that's finished! An old and beautiful picture.

In this tutorial, you will learn some techniques to make an awesome navigation bar.Along with the techniques and basic walkthrough comes the .PSD of this navigation bar to view all of the layer effects that I used and that were too numerous to take screenshots of each one (15+).
(Download the .PSD)

1. Start out with a blank canvas with a dark grey background (640x80 pixels). Create a new layer and using the Polygonal Lasoo Tool (A), draw the basic shape of the front nav bar and fill it in with a lighter grey (B).

2. Add blending effects by double clicking on the layer. I do not have screenshots for the specific blending effects I used because I included the .PSD.

3. Draw out a box under the first layer and fill it with a grey color.

5. Insert some indents over these two layers to seperate different menu items. To learn how to do this, visit my Indents tutorial.

6. Make an indent and then duplicate it. You can speed this process up by duplicating the layer and then merging the layers (Ctrl + E).

7. Draw out a rounded rectangle (B) using the Rounded Rectangle Tool (A).

1. Create a new layer and select the polygonal marquee tool. Make a shape similar to the one shown here (around 180 pixels high). Go to select > modify > smooth, enter '25' and press ok.

2. Set your foreground color to #D0D2C7 and fill the selection.

3. Open the layer styles dialog for your layer and go to 'inner glow'. Use the following settings:

Blend mode: normal
opacity: 22%
Size: 18px

You can leave the rest of the settings as default. Go to 'inner shadow' and set the inner opacity to 44%, size: 7, and distance: 8. Then Click 'ok'.

4. Create a new layer. Select the Elliptical Marquee tool and and set the mode to 'intersect'. Draw a circle over your already selected shape, so you get something similar to what is shown on the left.

Fill the selection with #FFFFFF and set the blend mode to overlay and the opacity to 40%. Press ctrl+D.

5. Hold down ctrl and click the layer 1 in the layers palette (the one which includes the green shape) to select the outer perimeter. Make sure your foreground color is set to #ffffff.

Create a new layer above the green shape. Go to select > modify > contract and enter a value of '5'. Then smooth the selection with a value of '5'. Fill the slection with #FFFFFF. Contract the selection by '5' again, and delete the selected area.

6. Set the layer's blend mode to overlay and opacity to 35%.

7. Create a new layer above the background, and fill it with a gradient as shown on the left.

8. Select the top half of that layer, then create a new layer. Select the gradient tool and set it to "foreground to transperant". Click and drag from the center up to create a white gradient as shown here.

9. Hold down Ctrl and click the layer in the palette, which has the green shape on it. Create a new layer under it, and expand the selection by 5.

Set your foreground color to a dark grey, then make a gradient directing downwards. Your gradient should look similar to mine on the left.

10. Set the foreground color to white, and make a gradient directing upwards from the bottom.

Open the layer styles dialog box for layer 1, check 'outer glow', and use the following setings:

Blend mode: normal
Opacity: 57%
size: 7 pix

Leave the rest of the options as default and you're done!

Interface Or Skin Design

1. The Base
With a new file in blank, make a new layer and in this, create an oval and fill it with black. Center it, and add the soft metal style.

2. Internal shape
Make a selection of the oval, reduce it 15 pts.
Now take out some parts, making the image more interesting. Copy the entire layer, and paste this into a new alpha layer.

3. Blur
In the alpha layer, apply a gaussian blur of 15 px

4. Levels
Then hit Ctrl+L, and in the levels box, use the settings I show here in the image. Copy the alpha channel, and paste the image into a new layer ( standard layer).

5. Round corners
The trick with the alpha results in an image with some rounded corners, very nice and with this style, better! Well, we need to select the shape again (Ctrl + mouse click) contract the selection a bit and create a new shape in a new layer.

6. New shape
In the new layer, we need to fill the selection and apply the same style of the "base" but only changing the direction of the gradient fill to inverse. This change increases the effect of bevel here.

7. Screen
Now, in a new layer we draw a shape for our screen and make it more rounded using the "alpha trick". Again, I fill this one with a gradient, inverse to make more effect.

8. Color screen
One more layer to create the screen: A gradient (I like this green tones) and an inner shadow. I've added here some little lines to give the "scan effect".

9. Screen details
And the rest of the screen details: The text, some lines for the volume and equalizer... Whatever you want.
We are almost done...

10. Details
Well... Now, the rest are add some details like buttons, screws and stuff like that... And of course, a logo if you want. Remember the use of the "alpha trick" and the styles that give the cool final effects.

2. Filter > Disort > Shear
Play around with the setting untill you see something you like.

3. After you finished duplicate the layer and move it 1-2 pixels to the right to get this effect on the left.

4. Now just give it a Drop Shadow

Layer effect = Multiply 66%
120 Angle
Distance = 13
Spread = 0
Size = 10

And you're done.

1. Start a new document and grab your Rounded Rectangle tool. Draw out a rectangle, rasterize it (right click on Layer > Rasterize Layer) and then use your marquee to slice the bottom off of it.

2. Add the following settings by double clicking on the layer. Download the .PSD to see my settings.

3. On a new layer, add these indents one pixel apart from each other. You can duplicate the layers, move the indent, then merge (Ctrl + E) to do this quicker.

4. Draw a Rounded Triangle (A), Rasterize the layer, and use the following blending effects on it (B).

5. Draw a square behind your other layers and use the following blending effects on it.

6. Repeat step 1 by making a smaller Rounded Rectangle and cutting the top off. Add the following blending effects.

7. Add those indents I talked about in step 3, just make them smaller this time.

Now that I've finished this tutorial, this is what we have so far if you add a Color Balance layer. Quite a nice layout !

XP Style Navigation

1. Open a new file (CTRL + N). File > New. (Size doesnt really matter, just follow my example)

2. Make a new layer (Layer > New > Layer) and make sure its selected. Select the upper portion of the document (on the new layer).

3. Now set the gradients to the following colors:
- Lighter color: #DDF1F8
- Darker color: #BFD2D0

4. Now select the gradient tool (G). And push the mouse button at the top of your selection and pull it down (keep mouse button pushed in), at the bottom of your selection release the button.

You should now have something like this:

5. Add a new layer and select it. Change your "primairy" color to : #046BAE. Now draw a 3 pixel (height) line across your screen on the new layer. Make it so that it's at the bottom of the gradient bar (from steps 2, 3 and 4).

6. Add another new layer and select it. In this new layer select the elliptical marquee tool. With this tool hold down shift and make a perfect circle (like in the image below).

7. Change your primairy color to: #DDF1F8 again. Now press ALT + BACKSPACE to fill the selection with this color. Press CTRL + D to deselect.

8. Now go to blending options (right click on layer and then select blending options) and add a drop shadow with the following values:

9. Also add a bevel by applying the following values:

10. You should now have something that looks like the image below.

11. Make a duplicate copy of the layer bby pressing Ctl + J or Layer > New > Layer Via Copy.

12. You can now put some icons on top of the buttons if you want to. I used webdings. And voila, you're done.

3. Give your round circle a Bevel & Emboss effect settings:
Style inner BevelSmooth; Depth: 201; Direction up; Size 10; Angle 90; Attitude 34; Highlight Screen 100% color white; Shadow Mode Multiply color black 100% opacity.

4. Give you circle a stroke blend with these settings: Size 2px; Position: Outside; Blend Normal; Fill type Gradient; Style Linear; Angle -90; Scale 150.

1. First, open a new file with the dimensions 400 x 400 pixels and reset your colors (ctrl+d) then go to Filter > Render > Clouds.

2. Next, go to Filter > Blur > Radial Blur and use the settings Amount = 40, Method = Spin, Quality = Best.

3. Now, go to Filter > Sketch > Bas Relief and use the settings: Detail = 13, Smoothness = 10.

4. Now it's time to make it look like water using the chrome effect so go to Filter > Sketch > Chrome and use these settings: Detail = 6, Smoothness = 2.

5. Finally, we just need to add some color so press Ctrl+U to go to the Hue Ajustment Settings and change the settings to: Colorize, Hue = 205, Saturation = 25, Lightness = 0. That's it!

1. First, set your image to 400x400. Or anyother size you want. Then press D to put your colors to default.

2. Next go to Filter > Render > Clouds, you should now have something like this:

5. Press Ctrl+F to Blur Again.

Make Angle +100.

8. Lighten Copied Layer

9. Press Ctrl+e to merge layers.

10. Duplicate this layer again

11. Now go to Filter >> Distort >> Twirl. Set to -200

12. Lighten layer. See step 8.

13. Press Ctrl+E to merge again.

14. Press Ctrl+u to colorize your image.

15. Again, Duplicate the current layer. Then Set the blend Mode to overlay

16. Merge layers (Ctrl+E) and your done.

1. Let's start off by creating a 500x500 document, preferably with a white background. To begin, make sure that your colors are at their defaults (Black + White) (D).

2. Go to Filter > Render > Clouds, then Filter > Render > Difference Clouds.

3. Next go up to Image > Adustments > Invert.

4. Then you want to go to Image > Adjustments > Levels and slide the middle arrow completely to the right.

5. You should have something like this so far.

6. Duplicate your layer and set it to "Color Dodge".

7. Create a new layer and select the color "#790000", you can play around with other colors, but this is just one that we're using for this. Fill the layer with the chose color and set it the layer to "Soft Light".

8. Switch to your first, original layer. Go to Filters > Render > Lens Flare. On this layer you will be placing simple Lens Flares to give the sense of it giving off light. When doing this, you will want to attempt to place the flare on large spots of white, as shown in the given pic. You will need to have the flare set to the "105mm Prime" lens type and 100% Brightness.

9. Keep repeating step 8 until you feel that you've gotten enough on there to suit your needs.

1. Step one, open a new image, it doesn't really matter what size but be sure to set your background color to black. (this effect generally looks its best on a black background.) Make a new layer and select the "Polygonal lasso tool" and create an abstract shape that looks similar to the example below.(It doesn't really matter what color you use here either, but just don't make it too dark, and feel free to experiment.)

2. Now we can start our highlights of our smoke. Select the "Dodge" tool and make the brush size around "50" and the "Range" to "highlights." Now use this tool around the edges and corners of your shape. Next, select the "Burn tool" and use it in the middle and wherever you see fit. You should have somthing that looks like this:

3. Here we can make it look like smoke now. Go to "filter"/"Distort"/"Wave." And make the settings as follows:

- Generators "5"
- Wavelength "10"/"120"
- Amplitude "5"/"35"
- Scale at "100%" for both.

4. Right after you have used the "wave" filter you can go to "Edit"/"Fade-Wave" and set the opacity to "50%." Now repeat this distort and fade method many times, or untill you think it looks best.

5. To make this effect look even better you may have to "distort", resize, and change the blending modes when fading a bit. And lastly, to make it different colors instead of the same throughout. make a new layer and use the "brush" tool all over the place using different colors. then set that layers "blending mode" to "Overlay." And there you have it, a simple yet effective smoke method!

It's amazing what you can do with some Adobe Photoshop training and a little time!

1. Choose your smoking object
In this case it's a gun. Guns only smoke for a second after you shoot them but there are certain liberties the entertainment industry takes with physics. Like spaceships making rumblesounds and firey exposions in the vacuum of space. Smoking guns just add drama to a picture.

2. Airbrush
On a new layer airbrush some grey over the origin of the smoke. Use a soft brush setting and a lower opacity.

3. Spatter fun
Now we need some "pepper". Change you airbrushes setting to "dissolve" and shoot some white and black particles onto the grey spot. Not too many, just enough to smear.

4. Smudge
Grab the smudge tool (looks like a pointing finger) and smear the pixels upward in an "S" like motion. Don't worry if the effect is too severe right now, just smooth it all out.

5. Finishing Effects
Grab your eraser tool and set it to airbrush with a soft brush setting and trim out the unwanted smoke. Use the dodge and burn tools to add highlites and shadows to the smoke. Re-smear any pixels or effects that look "too hard".
Lower the smoke layers opacity to taste.

1. Choose your source.
The blast has to come from somewhere. We put a circle here for tutorial purposes but you just pretend it's a gun muzzle or someones hand.

2. Make the base of the bolt
Use the polygon lasso tool and click out a blast beam selection in perspective like you see here.Make sure it's on it's own layer. Fill it with a good bolt color...light blues, purples, greens and reds are good. Make sure it's a bright color high on the saturation.

3. Getting in touch with your inner bolt
Now create a new blank layer above the outer bolt. ctrl+click on the outerbolt layer to make the bolt a selection. Contract this selection by a few pixels and fill this new contracted selection with white on it's own layer. You should now have something like you see here.

4. Blurry
Apply a gaussian blur to each layer. Play with the settings... We used a 2.5 pixel blur...you may need less or more depending on the size of your picture.
This technique also makes a good light saber.

5. snap, crackle, pop
On another new blank layer, grab your paintbrush, set it to 1 pixel, 100% opacity, normal blendingmode and brush out some lightning forks along the beam.

6. Glow
If you have photoshop 5 or higher you can apply the "OuterGlow" layer effect to the lightning layer. Use the eyedropper to select the outer glow color from the beam itself and then you're done.

1. First of all create a new image and then right away create a new layer. Also set the background color as black, (the image size I used here is 350X500). Now make a selection one pixel wide and make it cover the whole length. Fill this selection in with white.

2. Next you have to go to Filter > Distort > Wave. The settings are as follows, [Generators - 5], [Wavelenth - 225/299], [Amplitude - 5/35], and [Scale - 100/100]. Now you have a wavey line, Apply an outer glow and transform and duplicate it a bit to look like this. ( Or experiment, I am just giving you an idea of how this is done.) I made the light balls with the gradient tool set to "radial."

3. You can now start to add detail, smaller particals and some dodges. This effect is easy, but it really depends on how much time you want to spend doing it. It really starts to look good on 3D explosions in abstracts. I went ahead doing a little more detail using the same techniques and styles.

1. Start off with a new document, size doesn't matter.
Grab your paint bucket tool and fill your document with black.

Now make your foreground color white. Select your pencil tool and select the brush to be 9 px, now draw a straight white line almost at the bottom.

Select your smudge tool and make your brush about 19 px then smudge the line upwards.

Now it's time to color the fire, click ctrl+u and use hue: 38 saturation: 60.

Duplicate your current layer, and now you can choose freely which style you like. Set your blending option to either color burn, linear burn, color dodge, linear light or vivid light.

1. Start off with a new image of your size with a black backgound. Create a new layer (we're only going to use one layer in this tutorial so don't care to call it something). Create dots with the airbrush, use a 100px brush.

2. Now do some work with the smudge tool. Drag the smudge tool from out to in and in to out to get a nice effect. Work on it to make it look nice, yet random.

3. Now here comes the part where all the noobies fall off. This might take time.
Start off by using different brushes (I used photoshop brushes only..!) and make effects. Use the grungy brushes and make sparkles coming out of the explosion. Do some more smudging, add more brushing and vola!

4. Pick up your burn tool, choose the scattered maple leaves brush for your burn tool,
master diameter (or brush size if you like)= 15-25
range=highlights
exposure=22%
Now go over your white boring explosion and brush... Release your mouse button and brush over it to create some dark parts and some lighter. Make it cool, yet random. Vary the brush size for better results!

5. Here comes the easy parts - straight ahead actually. Duplicate your layer and set it to hard light. Then go image - adjustments - hue/saturation and get a nice color (you have to lower the brightness to make the colors appear). If your a real pro, you can use color balance. I used hue/saturation

6. Duplicate that layer you just made, and set it to Color Burn. Now go image - adjustments - hue/saturation and give it a nice, warm, red color. This will add depth and some realistic effect to it.

6. Now you're done. This effect works wonderfully in abstracts.

1. Start off with your render such as the one below, there should be clear areas for lighting potential.

2. Using above pen settings and nice lighting color draw series of straight lines as below you can cheat by only drawing a few and then using duplicate layer and merge linked layer tools to quickly build them up.

3. Using the Edit --> Transform --> Distort tool shape the layer of lines so that it sits over the lighting area as shown below.

4. Use an textured eraser with the above settings and absolutely now shape opacity dynamics. carefully use the mouse with single "clicks" to erase large spotted areas of the lights in single large circles the result should be similar to below.

5. Using a normal airbrush style eraser and 25% opacity erase carefully the lighting as it fades into the distance as below.

6. Finally duplicate the lighting layer and apply Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian blur radius 6
Set this new layer to color dodge the result should be something like below.

Start off with your render such as the one below there should be clear areas for lightning otential.

Using the polygon lasso tool with no feather select the area for lighting be sure to include any little jagged bits to add interest as below.

Then fill this layer with a good deep color slightly darker than the intended lighting color as shown below.

Then duplicate that previous layer and set this new layer to color dodge the result should be a brighter color something close to what you want.

The important bit go back to the original (orange) light layer and apply filter --> Blur --> gaussian blur radius 6 The result should be similar to below

Finally on a new layer, with the above brush settings and a deep red color brush around the top and particulartly the bottom below the light set this layer to soft light.
The result should be similar to that below.

1. Open Photoshop. You need to open an image from which you will be a creating pattern.

2. Filter > Pattern Maker

3. This will open the Pattern Maker dialogue box with the Rectangular Marqee Tool selected by default.

4. Drag Rectangular Marqee Tool on the portion of the image from which you want to create the pattern. (marked with white circle)

5. Click Generate.

6. This will create the pattern which has to be saved.

7. At the right bottom of the dialogue box you will find "Tile History".

8. Select "Saves Preset Pattern" (marked with green circle)

9. Click Cancel to close the window.

10. We will use the pattern now.

File > New

Go for any size of the file with RGB mode on.

11. Edit > Fill > Use (Pattern)

Open newly created pattern from the custom pattern flyout menu. Click OK.

This will fill canvas with the pattern.

3. This will open the Liquify dialogue box.

4. By default, the Warp Tool is selected if not, select the following Warp Tool at the top left of the dialogue box.

5. Input 25 for brush size and 70 for brush pressure

6. Place the cursor on the Toe of the left shoe and drag it slightly towards right.

7. Place the cursor on the Toe of the right shoe and drag it slightly towards left.

8. Click OK and save the image.

Professional Banner

Professional Banner
As a designer, many people may request an awesome, yet professional looking banner for their website. Here is a walkthrough of how I do mine.

1. Start a new document (696x150 for me), make a new layer and fill it with a random color.

2. Double click on this layer, go to Gradient Overlay, and create a gradient (Hint: do not use vibrant colors or else the banner will be too bright and discolored when you add more color).

3. I Imported a great looking stock photo of clouds on top of everything. (Hint: get a large image and then shrink it so that the quality increases).

4.I messed around with my blending settings so that it looks good on the gradient. For this I used a "Hard Light" for my cloud image. This gives it more vibrant color and also makes it look surreal.

5.I Imported a great stock photo of a butterfly. I have cut out the butterfly and placed it on the canvas. Please note that butterflies simply look good in design...I'm not sure why. You can use whatever photo you'd like.

6. I duplicated the butterfly, Filter > Blur > "Gaussian Blur"ed it at 6.9, and set it to overlay. This makes it darker as well as surreal.

7. I double clicked on the original butterfly image and added an Inner Glow and Outer Glow so that the edges were mostly clouded.

8. For this part, I followed my Abstract Swirl tutorial, made 4 swirls and placed them coming from an obvious light source.

Start with a new image, 250x250 pixels. Select a dark gray as the foreground color. Create a new layer, and with the Pen or Paintbrush tool, draw a wire shaped line on it, 15 pixels thick.

Gradual curves look nice. This may take a few tries to get right.

Name the layer Wire.

Make a copy of Wire, by dragging it onto the New Layer button. Double click on the new layer, and rename it Cut Wire.

Hide the original layer Wire, by clicking on it's eye icon in the Layers window. We'll use that layer later on.

Now, grab the Eraser tool, set the brush size to about 5 pixels, and cut the line up.

Hold down Ctrl, and click on the hidden Wire layer in the Layers window.

This will create a selection out of the layer Wire's transparency
Next, go to the /b>Channels window, and click the Save selection as channel button.

Select the new Channel in the Channels window, then double click on it and rename it Wire Bevel.

Gaussian Blur the selection by 9 pixels, then by 6 pixels, then by 3 pixels, and finally 1 pixel.

AutoLevels Ctrl+Shift+L, the selection.

Then, go back to the Layers window, hold down Ctrl and click on the Cut Wire layer to select it's transparency. Return to the Channels window, click on Wire Bevel, press D to reset colors, invert selection Ctrl+Shift+I, and finally clear the selection. Del
Deselect. Ctrl+D

Go back to the Layers window, and select the Cut Wire layer.

Filter > Render > Lighting Effects...

Create a white Directional light, and aim it down, from the top. Then, create a blue directional light, shining up, from the bottom.

Set the Properties to:
Gloss: 100 (Shiny)
Material: -100 (Plastic)
Exposure: 39
Ambience: -21

Set the Texture Channel onto Wire Bevel, and the height to 15.
Now, tweak the positioning and direction of the lights to achieve the desired effect.

Now, click on the hidden Wire layer to expose it. Click on it again holding down Ctrl, to create the selection.

To make the line 1 pixel thinner, invert the selection Ctrl+Shift+I, go Select > Modify > Expand... 1 pixel, and clear the selection Del, and Deselect Ctrl+D.

Filter > Render > Lighting Effects...

And set the Texture Channel to Wire Transparency.

Hit OK, add a dropshadow, and you're finished!

1. Open up your sketch or a downloaded sketch (whatever you want)

2. Create a new layer beneath your sketch layer and name it face(or skin) color

3. Roughly color the skin parts (I used #eed4bd)

4. Create a new layer beneath your sketch layer(and above your skin layer) and name it hair color

5. Roughly color the hair parts (I used #917352) (Repeat this for eyes, clothing, whatever you want/need)

6. Now create a new layer above the face/skin color layer and do the same for the hair

7. Now color in the shade parts of the skin (I used #b99e82), the hair (I used #53402b), and repeat this for eyes or whatever you want/need

8. Repeat steps 6 and 7, only use a lighter shade color then the first time

9. I forgot to do the lips and eyes, so repeat steps 6 and 7

10. Select the first shade layer (I am showing the skin in this tutorial) and apply a 3.0 Gaussian Blur to it

11. Do the same for the second shade layer

This should give you the following effect:

12. Repeat steps 10 and 11 for the hair, eyes, lips, etc

13. My hair shade wasn't dark enough so I duplicated the shade layer a few times to get a darker shade

14. Adding highlights/some more light. Create a new layer above the sin layers you have so far, name it face/skin highlights or something like that

15. Roughly color in the highlights with white.

16. Blur this highlights layer to something that looks natural and drop the opacity (I dropped mine by about 60 percent)

17. Repeat steps 14, 15 and 16 for the lips , hair , etc (whatever you want)

18. Create a layer called final edits, or something like that

19. In this layer make some final edits, I added some more darkness to the eyes, brushed up the hair on a few parts and added a reflection in the eyes

20. Duplicate the sketch layer, blur the copy by 0.5 pixels and drop the opacity a bit (mine dropped roughly 50 percent)

This should leave you with the following result:

Hit CTRL + T(=transform) and click the right mouse button, select "flip vertical". Now move the layer down by dragging it or using the arrow keys.

1. First let's create some text. Here we used Impact.

2. Then we want to turn this text into a shape. This will allow us to transform its shape in any way we want. We can skew it and give it perspective. To do this go Layer > Type > Convert to Shape. After this is done, we will no longer have the ability to edit the text. So make sure you have your text the way you want it before you do this.

Above is what your canvas will look like when you have converted the text into a shape.

Next we are going to transform it. Go Edit -> Transform -> Perspective. Grab either the top or the bottom left corners of the transformation box. Pull the handle on the corner up or down depending on which corner you chose. This will apply a perspective transformation to the text shape.

Now that this is done, we will need to rasterize the shape in order to remove the shape path. Go Layer -> Rasterize -> Shape. This will create a truly rasterized image.

Notice how clean and crisp the text is after doing this. If we were to rasterize the type before we transformed it, we would end up with a fuzzy edge. By first transforming our text into a vector shape, we prevent this from happening.

This is a great little trick that you will probably find use for at some point. It only takes a second to do, but it makes a much better final product if you transform the shape first rather that rasterizing and then transforming.

1. We're gonna start off by creating a new document (CTRL + N). I made this one 500x100px. Add a new text layer. Now if you're smart you'll choose a bold font, because thin small will be hard to read once you "outlined" them. I used Arial Black, 36pt.

2. Now go to Blending Options (Right-click on text layer) Turn the "fill opacity" down to 0%. The text should have disappeared.

3. Select Stroke form the list (still in the blending options menu). Size: 2 pixels, Fill Type: Color. Then pick a color you think would be good for the outline and Voila!

1. Set #003100 (Dark green) as your foreground color. Now Use the text tool and type out what you want, I used Arial Black, 36pt.

2. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur and click ok for rasterizing the layer. Set radius to 1.

3. Now go to Filter > Distort > Ocean ripple and set these settings:
Ripple size: 5
Ripple Magnitude: 10

4. Duplicate the layer and go to Filter > Sketch > Water paper and set this settings:
Fiber length: 42
Brightness: 70
Contrast: 64

5. In the layers toolbar set the blend mode to Hardlight, or whatever you think looks better.
Merge the two layers (Ctrl+E).

6. Duplicate the layer and go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur and use these settings:
Angle: 90
Distance: 33
Set the blend mode to Hardlight.

1. Type some text. I used: TG using the font "Lucida console" the font color doesnt matter so just pick one.

2. Now go to Blending Options (Right-click on text layer).
Select (and modify) the following:

Dropshadow, color to #4B6B95
Innershadow, color to #304B98
Outerglow, color to #44CAFE
Innerglow, color to #314E9A
Bevel and emboss
Contour, now just double click on the little box and you'll see something like this:

3. Create 2 more points to have a total of 4 points and give them the following input-output values:
point 1: input: 0% output: 0%
point 2: input: 27% output: 4%
point 3: input: 59% output: 56%
point 4: input: 100% output: 99%
You'll see something like this:

4. Select satin, change the color to #60ACFF and change the contour to "ring".
And finally select color overlay and change the color to #B7E1F7.

This tutorial will teach you how to make text explode with light.

Create a new document in your copy of Photoshop.

Settings :

Now type some text with your pen tool

Use 48 pt, color black, the font is your choice.

The longer the text line, the more blur you will have to do. To keep it simple type in the word TutorialMan with caps and lower case.

Now we are going to rasterize our text layer. Right click on your text layer and select Rasterize. Your text layers will now switch from vector to pixel.

We're going to add a new layer now. Right click on the text layer you just rasterized and select Duplicate Layer

Select the new layer on your layer panel as your current editing layer.

Set your foreground color to white and click Edit > Fill.

Setting :

Now we are going to Blur your pixels: Select the menu Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur.

Changing your coordinate scale actually interprets that your pixel points have been in a
polar graph and regraphs them in a rectangular graph which is the normal graph most are familiar with. (if you took advvanced math in hs you may remember the polar graph) What we are doing is changing the way the pixels are oriented, applying an effect to them in that new state, then will change the graphing method back.

Select Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates.

Setting : Polar to Rectangular

Rotate your canvas to get your wind to orient correctly. Image > Rotate Canvas > 90 CW

Apply a wind to your active layer. Filter > Stylize > Wind.

Settings :

A little break in between. Your project should look something like this.

Apply wind a second time. Filter > Stylize > Wind

Adust the levelsby clicking Image > Adjust > Auto Levels

Click Image >Adjust >Invert

Apply wind a third time. Filter > Stylize > Wind

Apply wind a fourth and last time. Filter > Stylize > Wind

Rotate your canvas back to normal by clicking Image > Rotate Canvas > 90 CCW

Change your coordinates back by clicking Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates.

Setting : Rectangular to Polar

On the layer panel Set Layer Mode to Hard Light.

Now it is time to colorize your image. Click Image > Adjust > Hue/Saturation.

Be sure to :

Check the "Colorize" checkbox and play with the settings of
Set saturations up to the top
Select the Hue of choice
set your saturation down to the level you want .
And you should get something like this

1. First, create an image about 300 x 100 pixels, and 72 pixels/inch. Select a foreground colour of #CACACA, and fill the image, to make the background this colour.

When you've filled the background, then select your text tool, and add the text you want to add, make the colour of the text close to #3F3F3F A darker grey. Once done, you should have something similar to the image below.

2. OK, now we can add the shadow. It is as easy as adding a layer effect, and can come in very usefull for other things too. Go to Blending Options (Right-click on text layer).
Use the options below, to get the effect. You can always play around a little with these, if it does not suit. (The colour used for the shadow is #8A8A8A)

So once you have that, just click OK, and you should get your final result. It's as easy as that!

1. Create new file with 72 PPI and white background. The mode has to be Grayscale. Type the text with thick font.
